The virtual seminar will be held from 12:30 to 2 pm (E.T).

Millions of people around the world have been exposed to radiation from nuclear weapon and nuclear power related activities since the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These activities include nuclear weapon testing, the mining and processing of uranium, the production of fissile materials for weapons and nuclear fuel, and nuclear facility accidents, and have involved systemic radiological harm. Drawing on the new book Nuclear Bodies: The Global Hibakusha, this presentation will explore the global hibakusha, who they are, how they came to be irradiated, the effects of these exposures on their bodies, emotions, communities and ecosystems, and the mechanisms that often have left them invisible.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Robert Jacobs is a historian of nuclear technologies and a professor at the Hiroshima Peace Institute and Graduate School of Peace Studies of Hiroshima City University. He is the co-founder of the Global Hibakusha Project, which has conducted field research on radiation affected communities in more than 20 countries.
